Motor that won't let you speed

1 Jul 2007

A Car that stops drivers speeding and detects pedestrians who are out of sight is being developed.

The futuristic vehicle will reduce speed by pushing the accelerator up if driven too fast.

And satellite technology combined with CCTV would enable it to spot hazards such as kids hidden between cars at the roadside.

It could slash road deaths — and help bad drivers become good ones.

Japanese car giant Nissan is working on a prototype. The model is being kept top secret — but could be ready for the road within five years.

A spokesman said: “The idea is that vehicles exist to protect people. Soon cars will detect danger on their own and advise drivers accordingly.”

The car’s hi-tech geographic information system stores speed limits on every road within a specific country.
