Police had warned they would be out in force for the event

One motorist heading for the first Crail Thrash event of the year, which attracts young drivers from across the UK, was caught doing 111mph.

Several others were recorded at speeds exceeding 100mph by the three camera vans sent out by road policing teams.

Senior officers, who had warned that police would be out in force, have described the speeds as "madness".

Thousands turned up for the event, which is held fortnightly at a disused airfield in the East Neuk.

It is similar to a drag race and is popular with so-called "boy racers" with modified cars.

Mobile units

Fife Constabulary issued warnings to young drivers during the run-up to the first event of the year, saying they would be watching out for illegal activities on the roads.

Two mobile camera units were placed close to the site of the event and one was located on the busy A92 road.

Andy Jones, of Fife Camera Safety Partnership, said: "From three mobile units deployed on Sunday, 106 offenders were detected for speeding offences.

"This is madness."

Ch Insp Alex Duncan, head of roads policing, said: "Will people only take notice of our warnings and the lawful speed limit when something serious occurs that effects them?

"As I have said time and time again the speed limit is there for a reason and we all are obliged to abide by that limit."
